Results from Tuesday’s School Board election project that incumbent Carolyn Jones and Anita Richardson-Epperson will emerge as the winners of a three-way race.

Tuesday night counts showed Jones had 1320 votes, Richardson-Epperson had 1349 votes and incumbent Marilyn Moehlmann had 957 votes. Official results will come out Friday. Jones and Richardson-Epperson will begin their terms this Monday during an election of a board president.

While Jones is familiar with school board operations, Richardson-Epperson looks to bring a new voice to the board. Her current goals are to be available and accessible to the constituency while obtaining the feedback received and implementing it, she said.

“My two major issues were accountability and trust,” Richardson-Epperson said. “I realized that there were some serious issues that were being discussed in the district among the interested groups, [and] I made a concerted effort to find out what those issues and current policies were.”

Richardson-Epperson also hopes that her presence will induce the school board to more fairly represent the elementary school districts.

“I’m not specific to my children or the elementary system,” Richardson-Epperson said. “But I did realize that there was only one board member that had any children in the elementary system.”

Jones’ campaigning topics included improving communication between the schools and the community, motivating people through positive recognition and continuing to study the quality of education.

Jones recognized that a challenge for board members is to create a balance by maintaining continuity on one side and providing growth to those to meet new challenge on the other.
