Two Iowa State athletes made the Big Eight honor roll after outstanding performances in their sports.
Troy Davis, a sophomore running back for the football team, was named Big Eight Offensive Player of the Week and Kirstin Hugdahl, a senior outside hitter for the volleyball team, was named Big Eight Volleyball Player of the Week.
Davis led ISU in a 36-21 victory over Ohio University Thursday night at Cyclone Stadium. The tailback from Miami set a school record with 291 yards rushing on 40 carries for three touchdowns. The total ranks 13th in Big Eight history.
He rushed for 197 yards in the second half alone. His longest run was for 46 yards.
Davis said he was very excited to receive the honor.
“We were at practice and Coach McCarney came up and told us. I feel really good about it,” Davis said.
Hugdahl was named Most Valuable Player at the Cyclone Volleyball Tournament this weekend in Ames. The third-team academic All-American set a school record with 27 kills in a three-game match against Valparaiso. The previous record was 21 kills.
The Bricelyn, Minn., native finished the Valparaiso match with a .489 and eight digs. For the tournament she hit .333 with 56 kills. She also recorded eight serving aces this weekend, including four against Western Michigan. Defensively, Hugdahl averaged four digs per game and four total blocks.
Hugdahl’s outstanding performance helped the Cyclones finish the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record. They travel to New Mexico for the Sunwest Bank Classic this Friday and Saturday.
