ISU cellist to perform
September 7, 1995
There will be an unusual musical combination on the Iowa State campus this Sunday. George Work, an Associate Professor in the ISU Music Department, and an accomplished cellist, will be giving a performance of three very distinct pieces; one is peaceful, another is a dance tune, and the final is filled with romance.
The first piece that will be performed is Bach’s Sonata No. 1 in G major. This particular sonata is actually a trio, originally written for the viola da gamba and the harpsichord.
However, for his performance, Work will perform the piece on the cello, while being accompanied by Joan Serfass, a pianist from Ames.
After the first sonata, the audience will be treated to a more rhythmic “dance” piece. “Suite for Cello” written by Gaspar Cassado, a virtuoso cellist of the early twentieth century. The final piece is the Dohnayi Sonata in B-flat major, Op. 8.
Work himself brings 32 years of experience to his performance, spending much of his time playing with the Ames Piano Quartet, usually playing chamber music. Work’s concert, which is an annual tradition, offers him a chance to change pace.
The performance will be 7:30 p.m. Sunday at in the Recital Hall of the Music Building. Work said he hopes to see many students and faculty members there as possible.
