ISU Music sparks

Are you tired of boring Saturday nights watching re-runs of Barbie Doll-like Pamela Anderson running down the “Baywatch” beach? Or how about sitting on your sofa on Sundays with nothing to do but watch “America’s Funniest Home Videos?”

If you desire more entertainment in your weekends, the Department of Music at Iowa State has some fabulous free things planned for students and the general public alike. And they’re all are located right at the Music Hall Recital Hall on the ISU campus.

Let’s start with Tin-shi Tam. Tam is the carilloneur of the Stanton Memorial Carillon on the ISU campus, and will participate in an international musical celebration of Amsterdam called the Uitmarkt in Amsterdam on Aug.t 27. The Uitmarkt is an annual cultural event which highlights all the important Dutch cultural establishments in a public celebration.

The carillon is a special instrument created in Flanders. It is the largest musical instrument on the planet and represents the Low Lands’ authentic contribution to the pool of world music instruments. Tam performs concerts each weekday noon when ISU classes are in session.

Sue Haug will tickle the pearly ivories on Sunday, August 27 at 3 p.m. Haug will present a lecture/recital on J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations.

She will discuss the interesting and slightly humorous background of this work and provide musical insights helpful to listeners.

“This set of variations is a very challenging work, but immensely satisfying for [the] performer and listener as it builds to a stunning climax through the 30 unique variations,” Haug said in a press release.

Haug is the head of the department of music and has been a member of the faculty since 1975. Haug will also accompany fellow faculty member George Work on the cello in his faculty recital on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Up-to-date calendar information about the Department of Music events is available in the Music Department Main Office, 149 Music Hall or by calling the concert hot-line 294-3831.
