Help for those who want to kick the habit

For those of you who smoke, but are trying to kick the habit, there is help at Iowa State.

The Wellness Center, located in Beyer Hall, offers a stop-smoking program each semester.

“When ISU went smoke-free a few years ago, a stipulation was made that a program must be offered to help any students, staff or faculty that wished to quit smoking,” said Mary Engstrom, supervisor of health and wellness.

The program is called Fresh Start Stop Smoking. According to Engstrom, it is the only program of its kind right now at ISU. It is free to all registered ISU students and costs $10 for faculty and staff members. Engstrom said that all enrollees make a $15 deposit at the beginning of the program, which is refunded to those who attend all sessions.

There is no time or date set yet for this semester’s first session. Those interested in the program can call the Wellness Center and give their time preference, so the staff can better accommodate participants’ schedules.

Engstrom said different methods used in quitting are discussed with the students, so they can pick the best one for themselves. She said that Cory Vas, a staff member at the Wellness Center and a doctoral student in psychology, is conducting the program. Anyone interested in the program can contact Vas at the Wellness Center, 294-1868, or contact Engstrom at 294-7968. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday.
