Dole shows cowardice
August 27, 1995
Presidential nominee Bob Dole’s recent decision to return a $1,000 contribution from a gay Republican organization is indicative of Dole’s moral flexibility when he’s trying to garner votes.
Dole’s spokesman has said that the contribution from the Log Cabin Republicans was accepted accidentally and would not be kept because Dole was at ideological odds with the group.
While Dole is morally correct to return money from a group he cannot support, Dole’s reasons for returning the gift are less than sound.
The money was returned only after the nature was publicly revealed by a newspaper columnist.
Also, this announcement comes on the heels of the ever-so-important straw poll, which, if this poll is to be believed, show that Dole is losing ground to the other Republican candidates.
Knowing that many Republicans do not support homosexual rights and equality, was Dole’s decision motivated by political viewpoint, or his political standing in the polls? We think the answer is quite obvious, and Dole has little courage in the face of political adversity.
