Government waste
August 29, 1995
In yet another shining example of governmental waste, it has been recently disclosed that two new public defender positions created this summer to deal with Polk County’s rising juvenile court cases have handled a woefully small percentage of the caseload.
Polk County is the same place where they are considering increasing jail space to handle the growing tide of adult inmates, at presumably, taxpayer’s expense. Meanwhile, the two public defenders have cost Polk County citizens approximately $15,000 for handling a total of nine juvenile cases in two months.
While $15,000 may seem like peanuts to some government officials, but to the taxpaying citizenry, we’re sure would balk at paying for things such as a jail addition when the money they are currently giving is being spent irresponsibly.
