New uniforms bring new attitude

Out with the old and in with the new. This phrase seems to have been used a lot when talking about this year’s Cyclone football team. Then came the uniforms; out with the bright yellow helmets, in with the fierce Cy and a whole new attitude.

“We were looking for a completely different look. We were looking to start new, to wash away the old and bring a whole new attitude to the program and the school,” Iowa State head football coach Dan McCarney said. “The uniform and logo were designed to start a new tradition in the program and at the university. The Cy logo is shown to be moving forward, forget the past, and look ahead to the future.”

Another reason for the uniform and logo change was to rally fans behind the football program.

“There has been great support from alumni and the public, resulting from the uniform and logo changes. Along with increased enthusiasm from the coaching staff, fans are gathering together to try to turn things around,” McCarney said. “Reactions have really been positive.”

Not only do the fans approve of the change, so do the players. Cyclone center Paul Skartvedt voiced his approval of the new uniforms.

“The uniform change allows for a breath of fresh air. They bring a new look for ISU that hasn’t been here before,” Skardtvedt said.

Linebacker Greg Boyd also gave his stamp of approval.

“It was a necessary change. We’re all trying for a new image. The team needed to start new,” stated Boyd.

“With the new logo, it shows Cy more aggressive. This helps bring forward a different attitude to the team.”

While the uniforms are a positive step for Iowa State football, the players who wear the jerseys will determine the new direction of the football program.

“The uniforms are a good change, but its the coaching staff and players that are going to make the difference on the field,” said Paul Skartvedt. “With the coaching staff we have now, this team has the power to get to the next level.”

Cyclone fans will get their first chance to see the new team look when the Cy lones battle Ohio University in Cyclone Stadium Aug. 31.
