All about International Student Council

To the Editor:

Welcome to Iowa State University. I would like to welcome all new and returning students to a fun and challenging experience at ISU.

International Student Council is an umbrella organization that unites all international groups at ISU. It is comprised of approximately 25 international clubs funded by the Government of the Student Body. Members can participate in campus activities and inform the Ames-ISU community about their country and rich cultural heritage.

The purpose of ISC is to expose ISU to cultures, lifestyles of those countries which the international students represent and also to encourage and strengthen communication and cooperation in general. Any registered international club can be a member of ISC.

Each member is required to appoint a person as its representative to ISC. The appointed person is responsible for attending all ISC monthly meetings held on Monday nights at 7:30 pm.

ISC promotes several events throughout the year. These events include International Food Fair in the spring, Shuttle Service from Des Moines airport and Fall picnic.

The biggest event of the year is International Week(IW). International Week is a project undertaken by ISC each year to promote international cultures, friendship and opportunities at ISU.

The purpose of IW is to publicizes and generate funds for International Student Financial AID(IFSA) to help international students experiencing unforeseen financial needs. It is a week long affair of displays of different countries, cultural performances, music, dance, ethnic food from around the world, fashion and slide shows.

This year IW will be held on October 22-27, the tenth anniversary of ISC.

You may volunteer in serving in one or more committees or in helping with the events. This is an opportunity to acquire important skills and share your talents with our host society.

Please join us to celebrate our positive presence in the Ames-ISU community. For information, please contact the IW chair, Tieu Hinh, at 296-2191 or E-mail him at “[email protected].”

ISC is more than just a governing body. It is part of every international student, a voice and an advocate for international students’ needs. You can help it grow with your experience and knowledge. You can make a difference by participating in it.

The ISC office is located in room 13, Memorial Union. ISC welcomes every interested student and member of the Ames-ISU community to attend its meetings and participate in its activities. Don’t hesitate to contact or join us.
