Jacobson Building walls come up

Cement is being poured and the walls are going up on a new addition of the Olsen Building.

Athletic officials said the Richard O. Jacobson Athletic Building, which was needed to improve the appeal of the athletic department, is currently under construction and should be finished by next year.

Iowa State has begun to satisfy its obligations to make Cyclone athletics more competitive. The current facilities have become outdated, necessitating the change, said Elve Everage, ISU assistant athletic director.

“At the time the Olsen Building was built, it was one of the best in the nation, but now it doesn’t compare,” Everage said. “Recruits want to come away impressed with the school, and this facility will definitely help us compete with the best in the nation.”

Convenience for the coaches was also a factor. Coaches are currently scattered across campus, which has become a commuting hassle. By uniting the offices together, officials hope the facility will help bring better preparation for coaches and players.

Head Volleyball Coach Jackie Nunez is anticipating her office’s move to the building.

“We are excited about the new complex, because it will bring everyone together instead of all over campus,” Nunez said. “It’s going to make it easier for the entire administration.”

The only offices not making the move into the new building are the men’s and women’s basketball coaches, which are currently in Hilton Colisieum.

University, state funding and donations are responsible for the cost of the project, which is estimated at $10.6 million. The addition, which is being built directly south of the Olsen Building, will overlook the football field.

Everage said seating will be slightly affected for this coming season, but no major dilemmas are expected. The northern bleachers have been removed, and the grass in the northeast and northwest corners will be reduced.

Extra bleachers are going to be positioned towards the south endzone for the Sept. 16th game against Iowa, Everage said.

Completion of the Jacobson Building is slated for Aug. 1, 1996, just in time for Coach McCarney’s sophomore season and the Cyclones first season in the newly expanded Big 12 Conference.
