Is comedy a science? There’s a “scientific” way to find out

Scott Andresen

Comedy, ahh precious comedy. The heart of the young is possessed by this fine art of laughter, and Dan Coffey is bringing his brand of comedy to the Ames Public Library.

Coffey, aka Dr. Science, is presenting a program for young adults who want to learn about the “science” and process of comedy. The first of a two-part program titled “What’s So Funny?” will be Sept. 9 at 3:30 p.m. in the Library Auditorium.

The second part of this “science” will be for the whole family at 7:30 p.m., and Coffey will bring in his favorite characters including Dr. Science, a press release said.

Coffey’s comedy troupe, Duck’s Breath Mystery Theater, celebrated its 20th year by doing shows in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

He has toured all across Iowa in a radio theater workshop funded by the Iowa Arts Council and has appeared on radio as “Dr. Science.”

Coffey’s appearance is being sponsored by the Adult/Senior and Young Adult programming committees, in part, to increase adult and young adult programming for the community, the press release said.

Sit back and relax and enjoy a two-part evening with “Dr. Science” as Coffey works his magic of “scientific comedy.”
