Des Moines gets big band, Chicago style

Chicago lives, with or without Peter Cetera, and here’s your chance to see this legendary group from the Windy City.

Chicago will perform at the Des Moines Civic Center Wednesday, Sept. 20, at 8 p.m. Tickets went on sale yesterday and are $43, $33 and $25.

Robert Lamm, on keyboards and vocals; Lee Loughnane, blowing the trumpet; Walt Parazaider, on windwoods; Bill Champlin playing the guitar, keyboards and lending a hand on vocals; Jason Scheff on bass and vocals; Tris Imboden on drums; and Keith Howland on guitar will appear at the Civic Center for one concert only.

The band originated in Chicago in 1967 and toured with Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix before hitting it big with their debut album Chicago Transit Authority. “Does anybody really know what time it is?” was their first hit single with many more to follow.

Chicago 17 became the band’s biggest seller with hits like, “Stay the Night,” “Hard Habit to Break,” “You’re the Inspiration,” and “Along Comes a Woman.”

The success of that album and their next four were enough to earn the band their own star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

Chicago has a new CD, Night & Day (Big Band). “Making this record was one of those magical moments,” Parazaider said in a press release. “At times it seemed as if the spirits of all those big name musicians were in the studio with us.

“I don’t know what happens after you step over to the other side, but I’m hoping that Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller and all those other legends are able to enjoy what we’ve done.”

Tickets for Chicago may be purchased at the Civic Center Box Office, in person, by fax or by mail. Tickets may also be purchased at all TicketMaster outlets or by phone at 233-1888.

Chicago will take the stage Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. for a surreal evening of legendary entertainment.
