Ohio tight end puts faith in McCarney and ISU
Coach Dan McCarney continues to stock the football cupboards with outstanding student-athletes. The latest signee is Joe Cominsky.
Cominsky was a three-sport standout at Buckeye Local High School in Raymond, Ohio. He led the school to the 1994 state Division II title game while posting a 13-1 record.
The 6-foot, 5-inch, 230-pound prep was the second Ohio native to sign with the football team in five days. Defensive back Kevin Wilson of North Canton committed earlier last week.
Cominsky earned honorable mention all-state, all-Ohio valley Athletic Conference and all-district honors after making 19 receptions for 300 yards and two touchdowns last season.
The tight end was a three-year starter on both sides of the ball, making 70 tackles at linebacker and his 19 1/2 career sacks is a school record.
Cominsky excelled at football but made his mark in wrestling and baseball. He earned a championship trophy wrestling at 215 pounds and was also an all-district catcher in baseball.
Des Moines Menace rock Elite 7-0 last weekend
The Des Moines Menace did the unthinkable last weekend. They held the opposition to no shots on goal. In soccer, that is unbelievable.
The Menace dominated the game by getting 37 shots on goal. They retained their first-place position on top of the Central Division.
Seven different players scored and the defense rarely allowed the Elite past midfield.
A record of 8-8 and high spirits take the Menace into their final home game Saturday July 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Hoover High School against the Grand Rapids Explosion.
