Chipping away at women’s reproductive rights
July 17, 1995
In an effort to dance around the issue of abortion, Republicans are attempting to institute measures that would effectively cut off many women’s access to abortions, if not their right to have one.
Measures currently under consideration include allowing states to deny Medicaid funding for abortions for victims of incest and rape, prohibiting federal employees from obtaining abortions through their health insurance plans and prohibiting women stationed overseas from obtaining abortions in military hospitals, even with personal funding.
Although Roe vs. Wade still stands, conservatives have continually undercut its impact by limiting access to safe, legal abortions.
These are not the actions of lawmakers taking a stand, these are the actions of lawmakers too afraid to say where they stand. Of course, coming out against a woman’s right to choose would get them nowhere, which is why they must resort to such underhanded tactics.
