A new police captain was announced Wednesday by Ames Police Chief Dennis Ballantine.

Mike Smith has been promoted to the rank of Captain of the First Platoon, the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift of the patrol division. He will assume command Aug. 1, Sgt. Craig Reid said.

Smith, a graduate of the FBI National Academy, has worked at the Ames Police Department since 1971. His last position was as Sergeant of Detectives, Reid said. Smith’s promotion will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Captain Larry Olson, Reid said.

A sergeant, a corporal and 10 officers will report to Smith.

Smith is on vacation and could not be reached for comment.
