Iowa State is looking to start another string of top 10 finishes in wrestling next year. The first step is recruiting and the Cyclones are looking good.

Four former Iowa prep wrestlers have signed letters-of-intent to attend ISU this fall.

Trent Hynek, from Cedar Rapids Prairie, was the 1995 Class 3-A state champion at Heavyweight and finished the season with a perfect record of 38-0. Hynek was ranked the eighth-best heavyweight in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News.

Matt Derocher also signed a letter of intent with the Cyclones. Derocher, from Lemars, was the Class 3-A 171-pound champion.

West Des Moines Dowling’s 190-pounder Mick Daggy and Waterloo Columbus’ heavyweight Corey Stevenson have also signed on with ISU. Daggy and Stevenson finished fourth and third, respectively, in Class 3-A.

These recruits will help head coach Bobby Douglas and company bounce back from a 15th place finish at the NCAA National Tournament in Iowa City.

The Cyclones have five returning NCAA qualifiers including Dwight Hinson, who placed third at 126 pounds, and Chris Bono, the fifth-place champion at 150 pounds.

ISU opens the wrestling season on November 12 with the second-annual Cyclone Open. The first home dual will be against Iowa on January 13.
