Debit card dangers

I was a little disturbed when I read about the plans for the new “Student Debit Card.” It sounds like a great idea until you consider the possibility of it being stolen. Most store clerks will be able to tell if the person presenting the card is you, but will vending machines, copy machines, washers and dryers be able to do the same?
If you put $50 on your debit card before going to the mall and lose it on the way, you are out $50. If you lose an ATM card, at least the person finding it has to know my PIN to use it.
