Ban Trophy Tavern smoking
July 17, 1995
It is often rumored that smoking in the Trophy Tavern in the Memorial Union could be banned at any moment. This idea deserves serious consideration.
There should be some alternative for smokers (i.e., somewhere for them to go) and The Maintenance Shop would be the perfect alternative.
The arguments for implementing this action are fairly obvious. The Tavern is a highly trafficked area where students go to get pop and candy from the vending machines and cash from the Shazam machine. By smoking in such a highly populated area, the Union is not recognizing the problem of smoke inhalation by non-smokers, which can be more serious than first-hand smoke.
The con-side to the argument is that the smoking population has the right to smoke and that this is the perfect place. If not the Tavern, then where? Well, by using The Maintenance Shop, the problem should be solved.
