Iowa State Football Coach Dan McCarney dismissed another football player Monday. Russell Johnson, a defensive back from Houston, was dismissed for violating team rules, according to a press release.
“I regret that this decision was necessary,” McCarney said in a press release. “Every member of our football team is accountable for his conduct. We will work with Russell to help him make decisions about his future.”
On Sunday, Johnson, 21, was arrested on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated at 2136 Ashmore Drive. He was released on citation, according to police records.
The returning letter winner was slated as the starting left cornerback on the preseason depth chart.
Last season, Johnson was suspended from the first game by ex-coach Jim Walden for his involvement in the check forgery scandal. He went on to gain starting experience in the secondary, recording 54 tackles for the 0-10-1 Cyclones.
“I will have no further public comment on this incident,” McCarney said.
Johnson could not be reached for comment.
