Tom Petty
For the second leg of his tour, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have decided to make a much-anticipated stop in Ames. They will perform in concert at Hilton Coliseum Tuesday, Sept. 12.
The group is touring in support of Petty’s latest solo effort, Wildflowers, and the Heartbreakers’ 1993 release, Greatest Hits. This particular tour is Petty’s first with The Heartbreakers in over three years; it will include a special food drive now that the group has joined forces with USA Harvest, the nation’s largest all-volunteer food distribution organization.
Tickets go on sale this Saturday, July 15, at 10 a.m. They are available at the Iowa State Center Box Office, all Ticketmaster outlets or charge by phone at 233-1888.
It’s baaaack . . .
For those who were disappointed when some of the year’s most intriguing yet short-lived films skipped over our fair town, the Committee on Lectures has devised a way to resurrect these movies for everyone to see.
Tonight, for instance, the committee will screen Don Juan deMarco at 7:30 p.m. in the Pioneer Room of the Memorial Union. It is free to everyone.
Don Juan deMarco is part of The I-Blinked-and-Missed-It Film Series, which is in its fifth year of existence. “In Ames, frequently, if you don’t move quickly, if a movie comes to town at all, you don’t get to see it,” Pat Miller, coordinator of the Committee on Lectures, explained. “So the committee decided to pick up films that people have missed.”
Guitars galore
If music and meals sound like a good combination, check out the Summer Guitar Festival going on now at Cafe Carioca, located at 2408 Lincoln Way.
This Friday night from 7:30 until close, Jack Stowe, who plays electrical and Brazilian guitar, will entertain diners, and Saturday night, Jack Hill, a Spanish classical guitarist, is set to play from 8 p.m. till close.
There is no cover charge, and those with ID can indulge in wine or beer, courtesy of the cafe’s new liquor license. For more information, please call 296-1114.
Tattoo you
Those who are fond of permanent flesh decoration in the form of tattoos may want a chance to show off their artistic endeavors, and now they have a chance.
Lasting Impressions Tattoo Shop in Campustown and Jim Peterson Photography are sponsoring the event at People’s Bar and Grill Thursday, July 20.
The contest will also feature local bands Torn Earlobe, Grooveyard and Great Big Freak, who will entertain participants and observers during the competition.
Prizes will be awarded in several different categories by independent judges.
More information is coming up.
