Events planned for the Fourth

Tuesday, the Fourth of July, marks the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, and to celebrate that anniversary, local communities will be sponsoring several activities for residents.

In Ames, the Jaycees are responsible for collecting money for the celebration and for organizing and putting on the fireworks display, said Steven Martens, a member of the Jaycees.

“We collected donations by setting up road blocks on two Saturday mornings at four-way stops, by putting cans for donations on local grocery and convenience stores, through mailings to businesses and by requesting donations from the community,” Martens said.

The Ames Municipal Band will provide entertainment starting at 7:30 p.m. at the intramural fields east of Cyclone Stadium. The band will play for 1 1/2 to 2 hours, and Martens said parking will be available in the stadium parking lot. Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

“We will have a concession stand with popcorn, pop and other items. The proceeds will go towards the cost of the fireworks,” Martens said. “It will be a ‘cool’ show and we hope to have a good turnout from the community.”

All the entertainment is free to the public except the items sold at the concession stands.

Nevada city officials will be sponsoring a full day of activities on Tuesday starting with a parade at 10 a.m. in town. Other activities throughout the day include hot air balloon races, the dedication of Harrington Park, softball and baseball games, miniature golf, entertainment from local bands, Tae Kwon Do demonstrations and a fireworks display at dusk.

The Nevada firefighters will be serving breakfast from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and the Story County Cattlemen’s Association will be serving lunch. Other concessions will be available throughout the day.

In Boone, Chamber of Commerce representative Carol Robinson said a fireworks display will take place at dusk at the Boone Speedway on Highway 30.
