Dark day for PrISUm car

Iowa State’s solar car, PrISUm Cynergy, encountered its worst enemy Sunday.

Clouds.

Overcast weather and low battery power from Saturday kept PrISUm Cynergy from the crossing the finish line on June 25. Day five was the first day PrISUm Cynergy was not able to finish under its own power. The car had to be transported to the finish line in Manhattan, Kan., after completing the first 120 miles of the 152-mile trip.

“We began the day with 50 percent battery power and we never saw the sun,” said Bryan Arnold, co-director of Team PrISUm, in a press release.

Despite not finishing the leg of the race under its own power, Team PrISUm entered Monday’s leg in 16th place out of a field of 40 teams.

Unfavorable weather has plagued the car’s performance during the last two legs of the race.

Hazy and humid weather, as well as hilly terrain, resulted in nearly drained batteries on day four. The team finished the 145-mile route to Lees Summit, Mo., in six hours and 42 minutes. Team PrISUm placed 16th with an average speed of 26 mph.

MIT finished first on Sunday, the University of Minnesota fourth, and Western Michigan seventh.

Yesterday’s 150-mile leg ran from Manhattan to Smith Center, Kan.

After day two of Sunrayce, Team PrISUm made a jump from its first day 15th place standing to 12th place. The second leg, which ran 170 miles from Terre Haute, Ind., to Alton, Ill., was completed in six hours, six minutes. PrISUm Cynergy’s average speed was 28 mph.

Team PrISUm finished the third leg of the race, from Alton, Ill., to Fulton, Mo., in 14th place. The solar car completed the 165 mile leg in six hours and 29 minutes.

The race will conclude Thursday.
