Lollapalooza and the H.O.R.D.E. tours: Get ready to road trip
June 26, 1995
If you’re craving some fab live music in the form of Lollapalooza or the H.O.R.D.E. (Horizons of Rock Developing Everywhere) tour, look no further! But you’d better be prepared to road trip, because neither concert will grace Iowa this summer.
For Lollapalooza, the main stage line-up includes Sonic Youth, Hole, Cypress Hill, Pavement, Sinead O’Connor, Beck, the Jesus Lizard and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. The nearest venues are Sandstone Amphitheatre in Bonner Springs, Kansas, on July 10; World Amphitheatre in Chicago on July 15 and Pine Knob Amphitheatre in Detroit on July 19.
The tour also features some new stuff to keep you entertained, just in case the bands aren’t tripping your trigger. The Mean Art Tent will display funky art and sculpture, while the Film Tent will screen short films of all sorts, including animation, documentaries, archival footage and B-movie trailers.
To make sure you appreciate what the particular city has to offer, The Lab (also called the Third Stage) will keep everything local: chefs serving their favorite recipes, dance troupes, martial arts displays, poets, fashion and in each city, two local bands will get their 15 minutes of fame.
Back by popular demand are Mist Tents, free water and booths offering exotic foods, clothing and jewelry.
We’ll have a while to wait for H.O.R.D.E. because the tour doesn’t kick off until early August, but do we need to save our pennies, take off work and plan a car trip before then, no? The Black Crowes will headline, and joining them are Blues Traveler, Ziggy Marley & The Melody Makers, Taj Mahal, Wilco and G. Love & Special Sauce. Sheryl Crow, The Dave Matthews Band and Dionne Farris will make appearances throughout the tour.
Like Lolla, H.O.R.D.E. also features counter-culture lifestyle vendors, arts and crafts and multi-ethnic food.
The closest venues are World Amphitheatre in Chicago on August 18; Marcus Amphitheatre in Milwaukee on August 19; Pine Knob Amphitheatre in Detroit on the 20th and River’s Edge Park in Minneapolis on the 22nd.
Tickets for all shows are available at Ticketmaster and at 233-1888. Including all charges, Lolla tickets run about $38, and H.O.R.D.E. around $30.
