Iowa State basketball recruit Carlo Walton was arrested June 18 in Liberal, Kansas, after he allegedly beat his girlfriend.

Liberal Police Chief Sonny Ralston said Walton was arrested after a police officer saw him strike a female, who was supposedly his girlfriend, in a bar parking lot.

Ralston said pepper spray was used “not to break up the fight, but in the arresting.”

Walton, 22, posted $95 bond and was released. Ralston said the misdemeanor case will be tried by a municipal court judge.

“I don’t know if the date has been set. It’s probably in August,” Ralston said.

Tim Floyd, ISU basketball coach, said he was taking the arrest of Walton seriously.

“I am disturbed. I am going to address this issue. Right now I am investigating and trying to find out as much as I possibly can. I intend to deal with it in a complete and forthright manner,” Floyd said.

Floyd said he was “stunned” to hear about the arrest.

“Carlo has never had a problem of any kind. He’s never been arrested before. We felt he was a great fit at the time,” Floyd said.

Walton averaged 18.5 points a game at Seward County Community College last season, Floyd said.
