ISU names new women’s soccer coach

A new era in Iowa State’s sports has begun. Women’s soccer will begin its inagural season this fall and ISU has named the first coach. Former Creighton head coach Cathy Klein will take the reigns in building the Cyclones into a winner.

Last season was Klein’s first as coach of Creighton and she led the team to a 14-4 record with a perfect 8-0 home record. Creighton defeated Nebraska, only one of four schools to accomplish the feat. Klein’s college career in soccer began in New York at the State University of New York at Cortland. She was a two-time All-American and was named to Soccer America magazine’s 11 “MVP’s” as a senior at SUNY-Cortland. At that time, Cortland sponsored a Division I program and have since moved down to Division III.

Before taking the helm at Creighton, Klein spent three years as coach of Division III Earlham College in Richmond, Ind., where she posted a 16-37-2 mark. That program had won only two games in three years prior to Klein’s takeover.

Another ISU football player dismissed

Another player has been disciplined by Head Football Coach Dan McCarney. Tendai Muyengwa, a linebacker from Ames, was dismissed last week for violating team rules.

“Our staff has been clear with every student-athlete on this team about what standards they would be held to as a member of our football squad,” McCarney said in a press release.

He also said that tailback Calvin Branch and fullback Artis Garris have elected to transfer to another instituition.
