They say everything’s bigger in Texas, including Loren Meyer. The 6-foot 11-inch Cyclone is now a Dallas Maverick.

Meyer has become only the fourth player in Iowa State history to be chosen in the first round of the National Basketball Association draft. Meyer joins Jeff Grayer (Milwaukee) in 1988, Vic Alexander(Golden State) in 1991 and Don Smith (Cincinnati Royals) in 1968.

The Mavericks used their second pick in the first round to choose Meyer as the 24th pick overall.

Dallas used their first pick on Cherokee Parks, a center from Duke, as the 12th pick overall.

As a Cyclone last season, Meyer averaged 15.7 points and 8.9 rebounds per game. Meyer leaves ISU holding the distinction of being the all-time shot-blocker with 134, while ranking eighth on the school’s all-time rebounding list with 677.

“I think he’s going to be making more money than he would in the Ruthven church league,” ISU Head Coach Tim Floyd said. “He really [helped himself] in Phoenix.”

Meyer’s teammate and Ames native, Fred Hoiberg went late in the second round with the 52nd pick overall to the Indiana Pacers.

Hoiberg averaged 19.9 points and 2.1 assists per game last season. He holds the record for most three-pointers made at ISU with 183, most attempted with 457 and ranks third in career scoring with 1,993 points. Other records that Hoiberg holds at ISU are third in steals with 207 and fifth in assits with 350 career-assists.

The “mayor” helped his NBA stock considerably with a 20-point effort and 6-for-10 three-point shooting at the NABC All-Star game at the Final Four. Hoiberg was also named co-big Eight male athlete of the year last week and earned first-team All-Big Eight honors last season.

ISU’s other draft hopeful, Julius Michalik, was not drafted. For more NBA Draft news turn to the Sports section on page 10.
