The story of how Busch Lite got to the Alamo Bowl

Wide Right and Natty Lite, the Valero Alamo bowl and Busch Beer did something Iowa State fans won’t soon forget.

For the second year in a row, Iowa State has made it to a bowl game, and unlike last year there is going to be plenty of Iowa’s favorite beer, thanks to some unlikely heroes.

Busch Light and Iowa. Those two words, like “Iowa and corn” and “Iowa and Pork” seem to be unanimously tied together. When someone mentions Busch Light, one can bet their entire life savings that an Iowan will say, “get one for me too!” That is why, when Iowa State went to Memphis for the Liberty Bowl, no Iowa native was surprised when they drank an entire bar out of what many consider “Iowa’s beer.” The bar, owned by respected Wrestling star King Jerry Lawler, was hosting a watch party for an Iowa State vs. Kansas basketball game. While the small party of about a dozen people were there, the bar soon ran out of Busch, surprising the bars owner.

As reported by Michael Admire‏, Jerry Lawler himself made a surprise appearance for the out of towners and commented about their Iowa Nice mentality saying, “The only problem is…They drank us out of Busch light beer.”

As many Cyclones are already aware, Iowa State beat Memphis in the Liberty bowl, leading to even more celebrations than the night before. Needless to say, Memphis soon learned what Busch Light is, and how much they need when Iowans come to visit.

Now knowing that many places lacked Busch Light, many became mentally prepared and slightly upset that Busch Light may not be a popular beverage in Texas. Voicing their concerns, the Twitter account of  Wide Right and Natty Lite tweeted out of December 2nd, “Dear@theSARiverWalk, If you could get the message out to your bars, please stock up on Busch Light. You’re going to need it! Thanks in advance! Sincerely, Iowa State fans.”

This message was not expected to be taken seriously by most people, but the tweet soon found itself at the account of the Valero Alamo Bowl, who said, “Don’t worry guys, were on this.”

Following what can only be speculated as “intense negotiations,” Busch Light gave the all clear on December 3rd with a reassuring message to those making the trip to San Antonio: “See you there.” Soon a bombardment of messages assured fans that Busch Light would be served at the bowl game, for the delight of many Busch loving Iowans.

While the outcome of the Alamo Bowl has yet to be determined, one cannot deny that the story of how Wide Right and Natty Lite got a bowl game to officially serve Buch Light won‘t be forgotten among Cyclone fans making the trip to San Antonio.
