Remodeling fields Clubs/intramurals

John Meyer

Many students may feel discouraged about joining clubs or activities due to that they “don’t have enough time” or “ I have class at that time,” but that’s about to change.

Russ Jones is the assistant director of intramurals on a project that is about to get underway that will give students an opportunity to partake in some leisurely friendly competition. The Board of Regents approved a renovation for the club and intramural fields, located southeast of Jack Trice Stadium. With the rain that came about over this last summer, it really emphasized on how bad the conditions really were According to Russ Jones “I’ve sump pumped the sand volley ball and softball fields 7 times this last summer and fall.” With this issue being at hand, it definetly calls for a remodeling.

This will include better irrigation for the fields to increase safety among clubs and intramurals ; installation of lights upon the fields that will give more opportunity for students to play at various times; a brand new parking lot that will create roughly an additional 300 parking spaces; a new facility dedicated for clubs and intramurals.

With having an approximate 300 flag football teams, 200 of both men and women soccer teams, and 200 sand volleyball teams, the lights for the club and intramural fields will have a substantial impact on students who are enrolled in evening classes, with less time restraints and more availability. Affordability will not be an issue for students either according to Russ Jones  “The best part is, it doesn’t cost students another dime” which is important because the project could cost up to 10 million dollars.

If everything goes as expected then they will break ground in the spring of 2019, and finish in the fall of 2020. The downside is that for the fall of 2019, students will not be able to participate in sand volleyball and softball due to construction.

For freshman or sophomores who want to get involved with intramurals or clubs, it’s time for practice!
