Republican Paul Pate wins race for Secretary of State
November 6, 2018
Paul Pate won re-election for his third term as secretary of state Tuesday night.
Pate won 52.5 percent of the vote. He is a former Iowa state senator and was the mayor of Cedar Rapids.
He campaigned on passing voter ID laws in Iowa and wants to register more eligible voters. He said he does not believe the voter ID issue is as controversial as it appears, and said voter ID laws protect the integrity of Iowa elections.
Pate has also enacted policies that make it easier for people serving overseas in the military to vote.
Pate’s “Safe at Home” program was one of the first he enacted as secretary of state. The program sought to protect victims of sexual assault, domestic abuse, human trafficking and stalking.
