Democrat Michael Fitzgerald wins election for state treasurer
November 6, 2018
Michael Fitzgerald, the longest serving state treasurer in the United States, has won his re-election bid.
Fitzgerald, a Democrat, obtained 467,890 votes when the race was called in his favor at 10:58 p.m. compared to 359,363 for Republican candidate Jeremy Davis and 20,349 for Libertarian candidate Tim Hird.
Fitzgerald was born in Marshalltown, Iowa and grew up on a family farm outside of State Center. After he graduated from Colo High School, he attended the University of Iowa where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business administration. His career began when he worked as a marketing analyst for Massey Ferguson, a tractor-building company, for eight years.
Eventually the opportunity for state treasurer presented itself in 1982 and he took it. Winning the seat, he has remained there to this day, despite several waves of elections when his party did not perform favorably.
