Iowa State Random Recall: Texas
November 2, 2021
Editor’s note: Each week, the Iowa State Daily will look back on a notable matchup from the past between the Cyclones and whoever they are playing that particular week.
This week, sports editor Matt Belinson goes back to Iowa State’s first win over Texas in Ames in the rivalry’s history on Oct. 31, 2015.
The Cyclones and Longhorns. On paper, this rivalry is a one-sided affair, with Texas owning the all-time series 11-4. But there’s always a first in a rivalry.
Iowa State welcomed the Texas to Ames on a chilly October evening in 2015 and came out with a win. And it wasn’t just a win. It was a shut-out.
The Cyclones took down Texas in a 24-0 win, improving Iowa State to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in Big 12 play. And just like the story of the 2021 season, Iowa State’s defense came to play.
The Longhorns went 2-for-13 on third downs, while the Cyclones finished 15-for-24 on 3rd-down. The Cyclones ran 92 plays compared to Texas’ 54.
Iowa State held the Longhorns to 204 yards of offense. The Longhorns crossed midfield twice in the entire game.
Redshirt freshman Mike Warren capped off the lone touchdown drive of the first half for the Cyclones on a three-yard run. On the drive, quarterback Joel Lanning picked up a 3rd and 10 on a 10-yard scramble. Later on, Cole Netten hit a 28-yard field goal to put Iowa State up 10-0 at the half.
Iowa State out-gained the Texas, 223-98, heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, Iowa State kept the scoring up. Lanning hit wide receiver Dondre Daley for a 19-yard touchdown.
Lanning led the Cyclones’ offense with 19-37 passing for 188 yards and a touchdown pass to earn the win in his first career start as a Cyclone.
Warren ran through Texas all night with 157 rushing yards and a touchdown. It was the fifth time in his last six games during the season rushing over 100 yards.
Some interesting notes in the big win for Iowa State were Allen Lazard returned after missing the previous game due to an injury and led the Cyclones with six catches for 66 yards.
Qujuan Floyd led Iowa State with eight tackles. And Levi Peters had his first two career sacks.
This 24-0 win was also the last home win of the Paul Rhoads era as head coach of the Cyclones.
