September 25, 2021
Iowa State came out with intensity and intent to win against Kirkwood on Friday. The Cyclones would go on to win 15-1 in another impressive outing.
As the fall season starts to wind down, Iowa State looks to get good knowledge about the team through the remaining scrimmages.
Impressive pitching
The Iowa State bullpen displayed great poise on the mound against Kirkwood. Every pitcher recorded a strikeout during the game and only six hits were given up in the ten innings played.
Janessa Jasso and Shannon Mortimer both had strong innings recording four strikeouts each in their appearances. Mortimer did a great job finding the zone striking out half the batters she faced and only giving up one run.
Karlie Charles also had a great outing. She was able to record five strikeouts in two innings on the mound and gave up no hits.
Lastly, Ellie Spelhaug did a great job closing the game getting three quick strikeouts and only facing four batters in the last inning.
The Iowa State pitchers seem to be getting into their grooves and will come into the spring season with solid practice on the mound.
Hitting continues to impress
Iowa State does not appear to be slowing down at the plate. The Cyclones recorded 20 hits on the day, giving them a comfortable win against Kirkwood.
The Cyclones are also doing a great job capitalizing on these hits by putting up 15 runs off of these hits. Only seven runners were left on base in the game, which is the least amount they have had all season.
The plate discipline is also something that Iowa State has shown excellence at. Only one strikeout was taken in over 50 at bats.
The Cyclones will look to continue improving at the plate in the remaining games of the fall season.
Sound Defense
One thing that Iowa State has been trying to figure out is what combination of players is going to yield the best defensive output in the regular season.
They have been trying many combinations throughout each game and have shown great signs of promise and some areas to improve.
The Cyclones did a great job managing the mistakes and keeping the errors to a minimum. Only two errors were seen all day by the Cyclones.
Out of the three sets of players on defense, none of them had more than one error. The players will look to clean up the remaining mistakes as they head into the remainder of the fall season.
Iowa State will play DMACC at home on Sunday, September 26th.
