Johnson: Women’s rights

Womens rights
Abortion is always a heated topic in the U.S. Whether an individual is for or against it, many people have a strong opinion on the subject. Those of us who are pro-abortion have reason to be concerned as of late. Roe V. Wade, the landmark case from January of 1973 is again being undermined. Texas has just made a new and quite disturbing law regarding legal abortion.
The new law includes some extremely concerning concepts. For one, private citizens may initiate lawsuits towards anyone involved in an abortion. This means random people who don’t have any relation with someone getting an abortion may sue them. Not only can they sue the person getting the abortion, but also anyone who helps a woman get an abortion. This includes the abortion clinic that performs the procedure, and the person who gives the women a ride to the clinic.
If that isn’t arbitrary enough, there is also no provision for rape and/or incest cases. This means a woman pregnant with her rapists’ baby will have to carry out the pregnancy. It doesn’t even matter if she was raped by a family member. This is a shameful and flat out disgusting law, and the supreme court should have overturned it immediately.
The supreme court of the United States has made no attempt to block this ban. On Wednesday night, the supreme court refused to block the law. This is alarming because it threatens legal abortion throughout the entire U.S. If the supreme court along with lawmakers make no attempt to stop Texas, what will stop other states from doing the same thing as Texas?
House speaker Nancy Pelosi offered some light at the end of the tunnel today Thursday the second of September. She stated that she would bring about a bill to codify the Row V. Wade ruling. Should this bill get through the house it will face a challenge in the senate. However, should it also pass the senate, Row V. Wade will become codified. In short, this would mean a women’s right to an abortion would be engraved into federal law. This would be a massive and much needed win in the United States regarding women’s rights.
In the end, there is a very good chance this law will not be codified. However, there is mounting pushback and criticism from lawmakers all across the country as well as private citizens targeted at this new Texas law. Now all there is to do is wait and see what happens in congress. And hopefully it will be in favor of a women’s right to an abortion.
