Kenny G brings smooth jazz to Stephens
November 26, 2018
One of the best selling artists of all time, Kenny G, will showcase his saxophone superstardom with smooth staples of the holiday season at Stephens Auditorium this Wednesday night.
Throughout a whopping 24 album discography, Kenny G has accomplished success with consistent and straight smooth jazz. His saxophone prowess developed over a 40 year career has earned him over 75 million albums sold globally. “Breathless,” released by Kenny G in 1992, is the best selling instrumental album of all time.
On his current headlining The Miracles Holiday and Hits tour Kenny G will perform his own contemporary jazz hits coupled with festive favorites ripe for the winter atmosphere.
Born in Seattle, as Kenneth Gorelick, he received his first saxophone at the age of 10. He quickly worked his way up from the high school jazz band to performing in a professional orchestra at just 17 years old.
Gorelick played professionally all throughout college until he signed a record deal as a solo artist shortly after graduation. His solo career was met with immediate success with his second and third studio album efforts reaching platinum certification.
Gorelick’s brand of smooth jazz is melody-oriented featuring his signature sax solos and easily absorbable tone. His simplistic and undaring approach to jazz music managed to reach peak popularity in the early 90s, contrasting the popular sounds of grunge rock and rap music.
Response to Gorelick’s popularity was mixed with some critics and jazz enthusiasts questioning his ability and creativity. Criticism in the midst of Gorelick’s popularity didn’t stop him from playing large concerts or from working with legendary artists such as Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin.
Gorelick doesn’t let the criticism get to him on social media either as he sports a self-aware and lighthearted online presence attracting a wide audience to his persona.
