College “Ames”day could be happening sooner than expected for Iowa State fans. As college football season moves closer and closer, more predictions of where College Gameday lands each week points to Iowa/IowaState for Week 2.

This would be the second time ever College Gameday comes to Ames. The first time, well was just in 2018 were Iowa squeezed out a victory 18-17.

If Iowa beats Indiana in the opener and Iowa State does the same with Northern Iowa, a possible top-15 rivalry matchup with a ton of storylines could reach Gameday. The games start time is 2:30 p.m. on ABC/ESPN and College Gameday tends to air games that are on ABC over other networks.

Kirk Herbstreit, a sports analyst for College Gameday, had only nice things to say about Iowa State’s Head Football Coach Matt Campbell back in 2018.

“Matt Campbell is incredible,” Herbstreit said during the show. “The way he talked about detail, discipline, toughness and accountability. Things that guys really fall in love with. It’s what ‘team’ is all about.”

It would the first time ever in the rivalry that the game is played in Ames in back-to-back seasons. The game is scheduled for September 11 which would be the fifth time they have played each other on that date. Iowa is 3-1 in those games.

Iowa has won the past five meetings and leads the all-time series 47-27. Iowa State has come close the past three years with three losses coming by a combined 14 points.

The other contender for the spot on College Gameday is Oregon at Ohio State. The Ducks and Buckeyes are both very good teams but the Cyclones beat the Ducks 34-17 in the Fiesta Bowl last year, which could give them the edge.

For the case of College “Ames”day, the Ducks-Buckeyes game is at noon ET on Fox., which ESPN-College Gameday often stays away from. Still, Ohio State-Oregon qualifies for a great matchup and should be an interesting watch until the schedule is released after Week 1.
