Three Big Takeaways: Ochoa’s late inning heroics help Cyclones upset No. 3 Oklahoma State
The Iowa State softball team took on No. 3 Oklahoma State Sunday to finish off a three-game series in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Sunday.
The Cyclones were able to grab the upset against the Cowgirls thanks to a late inning hit by junior Milaysia Ochoa that gave Iowa State the lead and the eventual win.
Iowa State now holds a 14-25 record on the season, 2-10 now in Big 12 play. Here are the three big takeaways from their 3-2 win in 11 innings.
Ochoa leads Cyclones to victory
Iowa State entered Sunday’s contest coming off two close losses to the Cowgirls as they looked to take one from the No. 3 team in the nation.
They would find themselves down early as Oklahoma State would take the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
The Cyclones were able to take an early lead after scoring two runs in the top of the second inning to give Iowa State the 2-1 lead.
Oklahoma State would end up evening the score in the bottom of the fourth inning as that would be the last run scored until the 11th inning.
Ochoa stepped up to the plate having a runner on third with only one out remaining as she cashed in the leading run with a base hit to left field.
Iowa State scored three runs on nine hits and six walks as they took down a top-three team in Oklahoma State.
The Cyclones look to carry this performance towards the rest of the season as they continue to try and get closer to the .500 mark.
Spelhaug helps Cyclones by holding down No. 3 Oklahoma State
Senior Ellie Spelhaug shut down the Cowgirls from scoring any runs for seven and two-thirds innings pitched.
Spelhaug came in for relief of junior Saya Swain in the bottom of the fourth inning. She went a full length of a game and then some to help give Iowa State the win.
She only gave up three hits and three walks in this lengthy appearance, and Spelhaug continues to be a vital piece to this Cyclones team.
Quick turnaround next for ISU
This was a great way to end the weekend for the Cyclones as they not only took down a top-25 team but were able to come into Stillwater and knock off their Big 12 rival in stunning fashion.
The team now heads back to Ames as they prepare for a doubleheader against Southeast Missouri State Tuesday. The first game will begin at noon, and the second game is currently scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
