Men’s golf heads to inaugural Big 12 match play tournament
October 11, 2018
This Friday, the Iowa State men’s golf team will compete in their final tournament of the first half of the regular season for the inaugural Big 12 match play tournament. The Cyclones will compete Friday through Sunday. The par-71 tournament will be played on the Houston Oaks course in Hockley, Texas and will be host to all 10 Big 12 teams for the first match play tournament in conference history.
Over the three days of competition, tournament play will be split into two pools of teams (A and B) with each pool having five teams ordered by their respective seeds. Iowa State is the seventh seed and will compete in Pool B along with second overall Oklahoma, Texas (3), Baylor (6) and Kansas State (10).
Each team was given their seed based on Golfstat and Golfweek’s rankings along with each team’s average scoring average. Oklahoma State is the No. 1 overall seed with a 277 scoring average. Iowa State averaged a 285 scoring average in their first three tournaments of the year.
The Big 12 is the first power-five conference to host its own match play tournament. Over the first two days of play, pool play will occur, where each team in each pool will play four matches. For each win, a team will gain three points and one point for a draw.
On Sunday afternoon, the team who has the most points in each pool will face off in the championship match. Second place matchups and lower will take place at the same time as the championship on Sunday.
