Two apartments were broken into around 9 p.m. on Wednesday at 900 Pinon Drive, part of The Social West Ames. No arrests have been made.
“Three Black males kicked in the door to one apartment, left that apartment and broke into the window of the adjacent apartment and then fled from the scene,” said Ames Police Department Public Information Officer Amber Christian.
Christian said the men were armed, but there were no shots fired and there were no injuries. Both apartments were occupied, and the residences’ identities have not been released. There have been no reports of stolen items.
The Social West Ames resident Matt Petersen first found out about the robbery after receiving a text from a concerned friend. He said no information, reports or updates were given by The Social as of Friday afternoon.
“I’ve been just sitting in the dark trying to figure it out,” Petersen said.
Even with his neighbor’s car previously being broken into, Petersen felt safe living in his apartment due to the police presence in the area.
“Now I don’t feel as safe, I feel like I need my own protection, I guess,” Petersen said.
The Social was notified immediately after the break in occurred, according to Cade Nichols, area manager. The windows of the apartment were re-secured and management has been in contact with residents to make accommodations for their concerns. One of the apartments was occupied by a staff member at The Social.
“It’s a high responsibility of ours to ensure that we’re doing as much as we can to provide the safe community in the area where you’ve got middle schools and businesses and housing divisions,” Nichols said.
Allowing the break in victims to change units and adding extra locks to apartments are measures The Social has offered to increase safety.
“It’s one of those unfortunate situations that quickly makes you realize we can never guarantee anyone’s safety at any given time,” Nichols said. “But we do have great working relationships with Ames PD, I get a biweekly and monthly report at any point in time that there’s an incident on any of our three properties.”
The Social has received concerns from other residents or parents of residents, and Nichols said he has sat down with them to answer questions and find ways to meet their needs.
Christian said home invasions are not common in Ames. Ames Police are currently looking for the three suspects.
