Ashley Joens was named the Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year for the second-straight time Tuesday.
After helping her team win the Big 12 Championship and leading the Cyclones to another trip to the NCAA Tournament, Joens picked up one final honor. The Iowa State Athletics’ 2022-23 Celia Barquin Arozamena Iowa State Female Athlete of the Year award is given to the female athlete that had the biggest impact on women’s sports at Iowa State.
Joens earned the honor in 2021-22 through her efforts on the court. Now Joens is just the sixth athlete to earn the award more than once and only the fourth to earn it in consecutive years.
Joens can add the award to her long list of accolades she has earned in her Cyclone career. Joens was named the Big 12 Player of the Year after the 2022-23 season and was a four-time unanimous All-Big 12 First Team selection.
Joens also earned the Cheryl Miller Award for the third year in a row, an award given to the nation’s top small forward. She was also a two-time WBCA All-American.
To add to all those honors, Joens made history by becoming the first female athlete to win the Bob Bowlsby Award. Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark announced the new award, which will be given annually to one male and one female Big 12 athlete.
Joens ended her Cyclone tenure in historic fashion as she rose to the top of Iowa State’s scoring leaderboard with 3,060 points. Joens is just the 14th player in NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball to ever pass the 3,000-point mark.
In her final year at Iowa State, Joens averaged 21.6 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per game. Her efforts on the court were enough for Iowa State to go on a historic run at the Big 12 Championship and earn the title for the first time since 2001. Joens was also named the Most Outstanding Player during the tournament by averaging 26.7 points and 11 rebounds per game.
Joens finalized her Cyclone legacy on the WNBA Draft night when she was selected 19th overall to the Dallas Wings. She was the fourth-highest draft pick in school history.
