Iowa State players Hunter Dekkers, Jake Remsburg and Dodge Sauser plead guilty to underage gambling Wednesday according to a media statement by the Weinhardt Law Firm.
The plea deal replaces the original charges of tampering with records with a charge of underage gambling. All the individuals involved will receive a $645 fine according to the statement.
A tampering with records charge is an aggravated misdemeanor which carries a maximum prison term of two years. The penalty for underage gambling is up to a $645 fine.
By entering into a guilty plea for underage gambling, all other charges will be dropped, with the only remaining penalty being the fine. According to the statement, the County Attorney’s Office agreed that the plea deal will be the end of the criminal proceedings for all three individuals.
“[Dekkers, Remsburg and Sauser] plan to pursue the sport they love and the careers they envision for themselves,” Mark E. Weinhardt said in the statement.
Although the state is dropping all the charges except for the underage gambling charge, the NCAA has not released any consequences for the three individuals involved. Sports betting, specifically on their own school, could result in a permanent loss of eligibility as per the NCAA gambling regulations.
