An increase in tuition and fees could mean less discretionary spending for Iowa State students. For in-state students, the increase in tuition and fees was more than $350 or 3.6%, and for nonresident students, $1,066, or 4%.
The Board of Regents requested an appropriation increase of $32 million from the Iowa Legislature, though the request was not approved. Working with the fiscal year 2024 budget the same size as the fiscal year 2023 budget, though Iowa State did receive $2.8 million for workforce initiatives from the Legislature, the Iowa Board of Regents voted for increased tuition.
Regents unanimously passed the measure during the Board of Regents meeting in June, where student leaders from each of the three regent institutions were in attendance to advocate on behalf of their student body.
At an increase of 4%, Iowa State nonresident students faced the highest tuition increase of the three regent institutions.
The increase is smaller than the Board of Regents ruling for 2022-2023 tuition, where they voted for a 4.25% increase in tuition from the year prior.
For Iowa State students paying in-state tuition, Iowa State saw the smallest increase in total cost of attendance out of the three Regent institutions. Cost of attendance includes estimations for food and housing, course materials and personal expenses. Iowa State’s increased cost of attendance for the 2023-2024 school year is $732. University of Northern Iowa is $738 and University of Iowa is $1,046.
Iowa State out-of-state students will pay $1,434 more than the previous year in total estimated cost of attendance.
Some programs have increased fees specific to the program as well; the total range of increases is available on this Regents document.
For mandatory student fees, Iowa State students will pay a minimum of $1,515 for the 2023-2024, and for some majors, that number is higher.
