The Student Government Senate elected a new director, a new senator and approved funding for the men’s lacrosse club at Wednesday’s Senate meeting.
The Senate unanimously approved $977.50 to transfer toward the Men’s Lacrosse Club for transportation costs.
According to Senate documents, the funds will go toward travel costs for the team to participate in games out of Ames.
President Jennifer Holliday, a senior in agricultural studies, and Vice President Quinn Margrett, a sophomore in business economics, nominated Daniel Fuentes, a sophomore in pre-architecture, to fill the position of director of academic affairs.
Fuentes spoke on the issues he plans to address as the director of academic affairs. Specifically, Fuentes singled out the impacts of strict attendance policies.
“If you’re sick or something and, you know, it affects your grades,” Fuentes said. “One idea that I had was just looking into that, seeing what we can do to make it more flexible.”
The Senate confirmed Ismet Acikgoz, a senior in aerospace engineering, as College of Engineering senator.
Speaker of the Senate Anna Hackbarth, a senior in electrical engineering, had the opportunity to interview Acikgoz during a rules committee meeting this week.
“He gave a lot of really great answers—and some answers that I had never heard before—about possibly expanding our reach to not just ISU but other communities as well,” Hackbarth said.
Savanna Gratny, a freshman in agricultural and rural policy studies, Emily Bray, a freshman in agricultural and rural policy studies, and Isabelle Dostal, a junior in political science, joined the public relations committee as at-large members.
Director of Health and Wellness Anna Spahn, a senior in healthcare management, endorsed Jacob Reichert, a third-year veterinary medicine student, to join the health and wellness committee as a senator.
The Senate also approved four at-large representatives Spahn recommended. Livie Herbers, a freshman in sociology, Jaclyn Kleve, a sophomore in healthcare management, Mya George, a sophomore in healthcare management, and Chaney Coppinger, a junior in healthcare management, as at-large representatives in the health and wellness committee.
