Iowa State volleyball sweeps TCU
October 13, 2018
Iowa State volleyball earned its second straight Big 12 win and improved to .500 on the season with a three set sweep of TCU on Saturday, 25-15, 25-21 and 25-16.
The win gives the Cyclones their first winning streak since Aug. 31, as well as their first home win in a calendar month.
The first set started with back-and-forth play until the halfway point in the set, when the teams were tied at 12. From there, it was all Iowa State, as the Cyclones flexed their muscle and scored 13 of the next 16 points in the set. This run was punctuated by Iowa State scoring the set’s final six points.
The second set turned out to be much tighter than the first but ultimately had a similar ending. As a whole, the set was defined by runs, as Iowa State started off the set on a 6-0 run, only to surrender nine of the next 10 points to the Horned Frogs.
Things would go back and forth after, but with TCU up 21-20 late in the second, Iowa State went on another extended run to end the set. The Cyclones scored the next five and jumped to a 2-0 advantage in the match.
In the final set, Iowa State was able to pull away up 13-11, thanks to four straight kills by senior outside hitter Jess Schaben to make it 17-11. From there, the Cyclones pushed their lead even further, getting the lead to as high as nine points and eventually won the set by that much, 25-16.
Leading the way statistically for Iowa State was Schaben with a double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs. Junior outside hitter Josie Herbst also added nine kills and hit the ball at a .450 percent clip.
Defensively, Izzy Enna, Candelaria Herrera and Hali Hillegas all had double-digit digs, while Herrera added an additional eight blocks.
Iowa State will now get a week off before taking on Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas on Oct. 20. First set will be at 1 p.m. and the match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
