Based on how Iowa State has historically fared in the tournament, I am not too confident in the Cyclones’ chances at making a deep run. My mindset has completely changed after the win over South Dakota State.
Iowa State was dominant the whole game, and honestly was not in threat of losing once. The biggest thing that gave me confidence for the rest of the tournament is how Iowa State’s offense just keeps getting better.
We know the potential the defense has, so seeing the offense taking the show further demonstrates how balanced this team is. Given that, I do not see Washington State being much of a threat.
The Cougars are a team that could easily fall victim to Iowa State’s defense. Failing to reach 70 points against Drake gives me hope in Iowa State keeping them under 60.
Along with the defense, I may be in the few here when I say I am not too scared of Washington State’s size. Iowa State has dealt with size decently well in the Big 12. Given how hot the Cyclones are, I see them running away with this game as well.

Based on what I saw in the Cyclones’ first-round blowout against South Dakota State, I am confident we will see a similar performance Saturday. My biggest concern was how Iowa State’s style of play on both ends of the court would translate against non-conference teams.
After about 10 minutes against the Jackrabbits, it was clear that the Cyclones’ previous success would continue in the NCAA Tournament. Iowa State hit shots at every level and did not have to rely on its defense too much, which was another concern of mine.
Washington State had a pretty underwhelming offensive performance against Drake, although this should not be too big of a surprise since the team tends to keep things slow. I believe even with the slower pace, Iowa State will sink into its defense, force turnovers and cause the Cougars to play uncharacteristically.
The size advantage for Washington State could put the Cyclones into some tough spots in the paint, but I see this as a game where they ride their defense to generate points.
