Iowa State women’s basketball guard Mary Kate King announced she will enter the transfer portal Friday. King walked on as a freshman and played three seasons as a Cyclone and now will put her name in the mix in the portal as a grad transfer.
“There are not enough words to express my gratitude for your support the past three years,” King wrote in a release. “It has been an honor to wear an Iowa State jersey and be a part of some amazing teams. You truly are the best fans in the nation and I cannot thank you enough for your love and support as I lived out my dream.”
The announcement came via social media days after Shantavia Dawkins, Jalynn Bristow and Nyamer Diew all chose to enter the portal. Iowa State currently has seven players from the 2023-24 roster left after the departure of King.
King took a chance and walked on as a true freshman at Iowa State, the school she grew up dreaming of playing at.
King played 27 games as a Cyclone, 12 in her freshman season, 10 as a sophomore and five games this past season. Her playtime was limited, usually getting the nod toward the end of games that were already in hand, but that did not stop the crowd from standing and applauding every time King took to the court.
In her career at Iowa State, King shot 4-for-9 from the field and 3-for-5 from 3-point range. As a junior, King made the only shot she attempted, a 3-pointer against St. Thomas.
Though King did not see the court every game, she was always there to support her team however she could.
