Iowa State kept the offseason additions rolling as it added St. Mary’s transfer Joshua Jefferson. The announcement came from Jefferson on Tuesday.
The 6-foot-8 sophomore forward was a key player in an outstanding season for St. Mary’s. Jefferson averaged 10.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game and started every game until his season ended abruptly due to a knee injury.
Jefferson was a force from the field in 26 games played, as he shot 46.9% from the floor. He also had a pair of games where he saw success from deep, as he shot 4-of-5 from beyond the arc against San Francisco and 3-of-3 against Northern Kentucky.
With the Cyclones looking to replace their bigs, Jefferson could possibly fill the void that Tre King leaves. Jefferson has similar size and shooting ability.
Along with his offensive prowess and dominance of the boards, Jefferson showed his efficiency on both ends of the court in the 2023-24 season. Jefferson maintained a 1.5 assist-to-turnover ratio and averaged 1.2 steals and nearly half a block per game.
Jefferson’s average minutes per game were the fifth most on the team as he filled well into the St. Mary’s starting five.
Along with Jefferson committing to Iowa State, Kayden Fish will also be returning to Iowa State.
Fish entered the transfer portal following the 2023-24 season after playing four games early in his true freshman season. Fish’s first season with the Cyclones ended sooner than expected, as he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury that required surgery.
In the four games that Fish played, he put up six total points, six rebounds and one assist. Fish looked for options in the transfer portal but in the end decided that he wanted more time at Iowa State.
Fish received a medical redshirt because he was injured before playing too many games, so he retains all of his eligibility.
The addition of Jefferson and the return of Fish fills out Iowa State’s 2024-25 roster.
