Jubilee Gospel Choir, a student organization, aims to provide students with an opportunity to sing gospel music in a safe and judgment-free environment.
Jubilee held its final concert of the year April 21. The group mostly focuses on singing and playing music where they are asked to perform, but once a semester, Jubilee holds a showcase as their final performance.
The group started in the fall 2022 semester, with 2024 being its second full year as an active organization on campus.
“This club has different majors, different backgrounds and even different cultures,” said Bradley Bittok, a senior in graphic design and the bass guitar player for Jubilee. “It’s a great place to meet new people. Music is kind of like the unifying piece.”
Though the group focuses on the power of the human voice, Jubilee members say the club accepts any musician who wishes to share their talents with the group.
“As a musician, I would say you should join Jubilee because we take any skill level, any instrument,” Bittok said. “We’ve had classically trained piano players to self-taught people, so we’re not very judgemental on how good you are. It’s more about enjoying the music. We help each other learn.”
Jubilee focuses mostly on gospel music; however, the group has been known to sing the occasional jazz or R&B piece, as those genres of music stem from gospel songs.
“I was a part of my church choir, and [Jubilee sings] those types of songs, so I thought I had to join,” said Cierra Bryant, a sophomore in pre-athletic training and a member of Jubilee. “When I joined, they were very open and very welcoming, and so, I stayed.”The group holds weekly meetings on Sunday from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Carver Hall. All are welcome. More information can be found on the organization’s Instagram page.
