Cyclone volleyball swept by No. 22 Utah, finishes Montana Invitational 2-1
September 1, 2018
Iowa State volleyball couldn’t complete a perfect weekend at the Montana Invitational, as the Cyclones were swept in straight sets by No. 22 Utah to finish the weekend 2-1.
Iowa State got off to a good start by jumping out to an early 9-4 lead in the first set, but Utah came back to tie the score at 12 before taking the lead shortly after. The Utes wouldn’t look back in the set from there, eventually taking the set 25-22.
Iowa State again jumped out to an early lead in the second set and pushed its lead to as high as 17-11, forcing Utah to take a timeout. It was all Utes after the break, though, as the Utah clawed back to cut Iowa State’s lead to 21-19 before going on a 6-0 run to win the set 25-21.
Finally, the third set started out as a back-and-forth affair as the teams traded leads until the score was tied at 11. Utah took control from that point, however, and soon pulled away for an eight point set win to earn the sweep over the Cyclones.
Standing out offensively for the Cyclones in the loss was senior middle blocker Grace Lazard, who had nine kills with a .389 hitting percentage.
Defensively, Iowa State was led by sophomore setter Piper Mauck, senior outside hitter Jess Schaben and redshirt junior libero Hali Hillegas with 14, 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
Next for Iowa State will be a weekend in Nebraska, where the team will play Creighton and Wichita State in the Bluejay Invitational next Friday and Saturday before traveling to Lincoln on Sunday to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
