Iowa State Student Organization Hindu Yuva will host a Ganesh Chaturthi event at 5 p.m. Saturday. The event will be held in the Great Hall on the second floor of the Memorial Union, which has an accessible entrance.
“It is basically the celebration of Lord Genesh’s birth,” said Vedika Desai, the president of Hindu Yuva. “His celebration is something that is very close to my heart and it reminds me of home.”
Desaia, a graduate student in molecular cellular and developmental biology, said when she is home with her family, she celebrates Ganesh Chaturthi with homemade food, songs and dances with her loved ones.
At the start of the event, Hindu Yuva will have an array of posters explaining various cultural aspects of Hinduism. Some of the posters will explain the purpose behind yoga, the meaning of “namaste,” as well as other aspects.
“The thing I am most excited about is the performances,” said Ankit Singh, an electrical engineering graduate student and Hindu Yuva member. “Our group is doing one of the performances that will be depicting the whole story in the form of dance.”
Singh’s group’s performance plans to tell the story of Ganesh’s birth and other stories surrounding it, all through the art of song and dance.
Though Hindu Yuva has scheduled several dance performances, the student organization urges attendees to bring their dancing shoes with them as they expect the dance floor to fill up quickly. There is no dress code required, though traditional dress is recommended.
The event will provide traditional Indian food in Howe Hall at $7 for Iowa State students and $12 for non-students.
Guests who plan to attend the event are invited to park in the Memorial Union parking garage at an hourly rate or may take the CyRide bus system instead.
