Student Government swore in supreme court members, a new election commissioner and sat senators to various committees during Wednesday’s senate meeting.
Sen. Anna Spahn, a senior in healthcare management, was seated as a health and wellness committee member after previously serving as its director. The committee focuses on connecting students with resources and advocates for improved mental health funding and safety measures on campus.
Sen. Lauren Vierregger, a junior in agronomy, Sen. Alexander Pallan, a junior in cyber security engineering, and Sen. Julius Sloop, a senior in chemical engineering, were seated as members of the sustainability committee. The committee leads projects such as the One Sustainable Iowa Conference and solar trash compactors to promote greener practices on campus and reduce its environmental impact.
When asked about her plans for the committee, Vierregger noted that the lit-up banner at Jack Trice Stadium stays on 24/7, even during the off-season.
“I’m looking to talk with the university about it and see if they could put it on a timer or figure something out for more considerable hours,” Vierregger said. “Just make it a little bit more reasonable.”
Jeffrey Barta, a junior in industrial technology, Abigail Jones, a junior in political science and Dylan Miller, a senior in political science, were all confirmed as Student Government Supreme Court justices. The court settles disputes over the senate’s rules and bylaws, reviews cases of alleged misconduct and has the power to remove officers when needed.
Santiago Fajardo, a junior in political science, was confirmed as the election commissioner. The election commissioner is in charge of running the election, making sure rules are followed and keeping the process fair.
“We want to make sure that the election laws are clear, we have a better relationship with Senate and again, we’re just a more professional organization,” Fajardo said.
The next Senate meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Sept. 18 in the Memorial Union Campanile Room.
